Fluorescent lamps are light sources resulting from a low pressure, mercury-vapour electrical discharge into the atmosphere, in which the light is generated by the phenomenon of fluorescence.

A standard fluorescent lamp comprises a glass tube that varies in diameter and length depending on the output, coated inside with a layer of fluorescent substance. Each end of the tube contains wolfram cathodes, impregnated with an electron-emitting paint. Inside, there is a noble gas (argon, krypton, etc...), rarefied with mercury atoms.
