The importance of the International Year of Light

Tuesday, 27 January, 2015
Last 19 January took place in Paris the opening ceremony of the International Year of Light, proclaimed at the 68th Annual Meeting of the UN. The event was attended by among others the Nobel Prize in Chemistry Ahmed Zewail, who made a presentation on "Light and Life" and the Nobel Prize in Physics Steven Chu, who made a presentation on "Challenges and Opportunities in Energy and Climate Change".

The International Year of Light aims to spread awareness about the importance of light and its associated technologies in key areas such as energy, education, health and communication, among others.

Its primary objective is to improve quality of life in both the developed and the developing world. It is vital, therefore, to reduce light pollution and energy waste and promote sustainable development.

In recent years we have seen how light has featured in major scientific advances that have led to the development of new technologies such as LED and OLED, the forerunners of things to expect in the year ahead.

Just three months ago, we received news of the Nobel Prize in Physics being awarded to those who discovered blue LED lights. In the early 90s, these researchers were able to create bright blue light beams from semiconductor elements. This was undoubtedly a breakthrough that led to a profound transformation in lighting technology and has been crucial for other industries.

Thus, the International Year of the Light that will run throughout 2015 in a multitude of acts all over the world, will remind us how important these investigations are for all lighting applications.

In this context, ELT true to its values will continue working in the line of energy efficiency to contribute to a sustainable development, which is getting greater importance as regards to humans welfare and the preservation of the Planet.
